Monika Ostroff, MSW, MICSW, CEDS-S (she/her), is the Executive Director of MEDA, The Multi-Service Eating Disorders Association. She is a Certified Eating Disorders Specialist and Supervisor, nationally recognized for her 25+ years of experience and contributions to the field of eating disorders. Monika joins Ashley and Sam to discuss her experience of what is now known as Severe and Enduring Anorexia Nervosa, her journey to shift the treatment of eating disorders towards a kinder and more supportive approach, and she shares all of the wonderful opportunities the community has to get involved with MEDA. Learn about the roots of psychodrama and pick up the lingo as Nancy illustrates the ways in which psychodrama can help each ‘protagonist’ explore their emotions, gain insight, resolve issues, and receive support from their audience via guided, co-created, and spontaneous dramatic action. This amazing modality reminds us of the healing power of community as we courageously approach difficult issues and connect compassionately with parts of ourselves.

Research suggests that eating disorders and body image dissatisfaction are significantly higher in Muslim teens compared to their Christian classmates. Fatema illustrates the unique challenges in recovery and treatment for Muslim populations, including ways in which evidenced based modalities can be potentially harmful and pathologizing for those in collectivist cultures. Fatema provides guidance and practical tools on how to support Muslim clients who are navigating eating disorder recovery while also participating in Ramadan or exploring their gender identity. Welcome to Season 2 of All Bodies. All Foods.! We are so appreciative of those who have listened to and shared our podcast and are thrilled to release new episodes over the next few months. Season 2 covers a variety of topics including eating disorders in the Muslim community, the fat liberation movement, personal recovery journeys, lesser-known eating disorders, and so much more.
To kick off this new season, Sam and Ashley discuss the research surrounding the effects of social media on mental health. Social media can have so many positives including creating community, normalizing experiences, and it can just be fun! On the flip side, social media has also been linked with higher rates of depression, anxiety, comparison, and disordered body image and eating patterns.
Join us as we discuss the research and process more helpful ways to approach it.

Paula Edwards-Gayfield, Regional Assistant Vice President for The Renfrew Center, explains the ways in which eating disorder signs and symptoms may present differently for BIPOC individuals, including an in-depth conversation about subclinical presentations and the much lesser known OSFED diagnosis. Paula explains the difference between cultural competence, cultural awareness, and cultural humility, while discussing the various reasons why marginalized populations continue to be misdiagnosed, underdiagnosed, and insufficiently treated. Paula discusses her advocacy work on diversity, equality, and inclusion, which involves facilitating support groups, interactive networking events, trainings, and peer consultation for medical and mental health providers.
